Finding The Right Cat Breeder (Part 3)

When searching for that perfect kitten from different breeders in your area, you have the right to ask as many questions as you want and to get as much information as you can. Do not be shy about asking even the simplest of questions if you feel it is necessary to help you in making your decision.

Below are two important questions that you must ask the breeder before purchasing a cat:

1. Be sure to ask the breeder if their cats are tested for diseases that may be infectious. Regardless of their answer, request to have the kitten personally checked out by your choice of veterinarian before you decide to make the purchase. It is safe to say that if they denied your request, then your only choice is to leave and find another breeder who is willing. An honest and reputable breeder will also have their animals tested for infectious diseases at all times, as well as maintaining solid records of these testing periods.

However, you must realize too that there are cats in almost any breed that do come down with an infectious disease. Even knowledgeable breeders who strive for perfection will have some animals that will be infected. What you are looking for here by asking this question is to make sure that they separate their healthy cats from those that are ill. If you happen to come across a breeder that denies ever having a cat tested positive from any illness, then you know this simply isn't true and you should look for another breeder. No breed is perfect and an honest breeder will tell you this.

2. If you have found the kitten or cat of your choice and would like to purchase it, a good question to ask the breeder is whether the animal is pet quality or show quality. Show quality cats are more expensive and are typically provided only to those who intend to enter their cats in the show ring. Most breeders prefer it this way. If you do have the finances to purchase a show quality cat and do intend on showing it, then a reputable breeder who has the knowledge in producing high quality kittens should be able to assess the animals show potential for you.
